Simple……

Keep it simple — that’s exactly what I needed to hear after my first group run. Doug, a fellow fitness pro, seemed to know that — though he might not realize he’s officially my running coach yet.

My love of running began nearly 15 years ago, not in youth or school, but after my daughters were grown. I didn’t set out to race — just listened to a small whisper to start moving. Work had drained me, and I felt empty. I began gently, one mile a day. Slowly, my body, mind, and spirit reclaimed strength and joy. It became a sacred rhythm: me, God, and the open trail. Keep following the quiet call — small steps can restore your whole life.

After years of caregiving, knee surgeries, and back trauma, I finally hear a quiet whisper again. Turning 60 may explain it, but it’s more than age — it’s a refusal to accept the voice that says “you can’t start something new.” That mindset shrinks your life and crushes dreams.

If a true medical issue prevents running, I’d listen. But what held me back was pride and fear: pride that I should’ve started sooner and fear of getting hurt. Both are lies.

I chose courage over doubt. I started again, step by step, with a plan that respects my body and goals. You can too. Strength, confidence, and lasting health aren’t limited by age — they begin when you decide they will. Fitness professionals need coaching too — and that reminder hit me hard this weekend. When I had to stop and walk during the run, Doug and another runner didn’t leave me behind; they walked with me. At first I felt embarrassed, but looking back I’m deeply grateful. Doug checked in after the run, offered calm, practical advice — “Keep it simple” — and helped me feel supported.

That’s what great coaching does: it makes you feel safe, seen, and ready to keep going. If you’re starting or restarting something, know this: people are already in your corner, and you are exactly where you need to be right now.
